Vana Tallinn is one of the best known liqueur brands to hail from Estonia, a tiny country in the North-East of Europe. The word Vana means Old, and Tallinn is the famous medieval capital of Estonia. First "discovered in 1154 by an Arab cartographer AL-Idrisi when it was a bustling market port - a gateway to the Nordic region.
Tallinn is the best preserved medieval city in Northern Europe boasting Gothic spires, winding cobblestone streets and enchanting architecture.
Once a home to wealthy merchants settling from Germany, Denmark and beyond, Tallinn Old Town today is enjoyed by locals and visitors alike, with restaurants, bars, museums and galleries bringing much life to this historical city centre.
In fact it's easy to imagine yourself transported back to the old Tallinn sitting in the busy cobblestone town square, sipping this golden brown, delicate, rum-based liqueur.
Only natural herbs and additives are used in the secret recipe, which includes noticeable amounts of orange peel, cinnamon and vanilla. To the British, the flavour may remind Christmas pudding, while the French may find the aroma similar to Cointreau.
Ex-pat Estonians in every country around the world drink Vana Tallinn neat in a single crystal shot glass to bring back memories of their homeland. And the most famous party cocktail in Estonia from the 60s all the way to the end of the 80s was a shot of Vana Tallinn mixed into a glass of sparkling wine.- so perhaps it is truly the "taste of Estonia"?
Live a little and try it for yourself!
